Recently, Madagascar, known as the Big Red Island, was severely affected by consecutive cyclones. Cyclone Honde passed by Madagascar in late February toward the north, causing widespread damage to homes and vulnerable infrastructure. Thousands of people were displaced.

Just two weeks later, in the southwestern part of the island, Cyclone Jude struck the cities of Toliara and Morondava, damaging buildings, homes, and roads. Many Nazarene homes and church buildings suffered harm in Cycle Jude.

Morondava faced rising floodwaters that submerged parts of the city, prompting evacuations for some residents. Tens of thousands were displaced and sought refuge on higher ground. Morondava is home to two Nazarene churches that felt the full impact of this storm.

In the southwestern region around Toliara, Cyclone Jude caused extensive damage, impacting many members of the Nazarene community. Over the past year, with support from JESUS Film Harvest Partners and Nazarene Compassionate Ministries, the Madagascar District has planted 14 new churches in this area, which has endured severe drought and famine. Unfortunately, the heavy rains and strong winds affected homes and church buildings alike, with many Nazarenes scrambling for safer, more secure housing.

“The weather all around in Madagascar is better now,” reports District Superintendent Patrice Ratovoarilala, “and we hope to show the JESUS film in April again.”

There have been some fatalities reported across the southern part of the island, but none within the Nazarene community. The Church in Madagascar asks for prayers as the communities work to rebuild after the devastation caused by these powerful cyclones and the resulting flooding.
