Fire damages Indiana church

Friendly Church of the Nazarene in Indianapolis, Indiana, sustained significant damage in an early morning fire on Thursday.

A neighbor, Mike Jared, reported the fire just after midnight.

"I think it's devastating because they just put a new roof on the place," Jared told WISH TV. "The parishioners were all happy about having that all done, and everything was looking nice for them."

More than a dozen firefighting units responded to the blaze, which was contained within the hour. The Indianapolis Fire Department said the roof caved in, causing approximately $300,000 worth of damage. The church does have insurance.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives is investigating the fire.

The Indianapolis Star reported the south part of the church was built in 1945 and the north end was added in 1967. The church recently finished renovations.

The 35-member congregation plans to hold Sunday services at its nearby fellowship house. On Thursday afternoon, nearby Lakeview Church served hot dogs and soft drinks to the Friendly congregation.
